The Financial Year Ahead

(2016/17)

With Sudhir

An Overview

The North node of the Moon indicates the general direction we are going in. It is presently in Virgo, in the sector of capital, or resources. The hint offered here is that it remains wise to keep a store of acorns in your cellar. Virgo is one of the more careful signs of the zodiac. Virgo comes unstuck if unreasonable expectations begin to dominate. Have strong foundations, but be prepared to bend with the shifts and changes that are to come. To hold to an unyielding financial line, will make your business brittle — and vulnerable. Understand more and impose less. Jupiter, the planet of fortune, shifts out of Virgo midyear, into Libra. Libra is prone to romantic ideals, which can play merry havoc with the best laid plans. Libra is also heavily invested in notions of justice. When there’s a squeeze, it becomes hard to ignore issues of justice in the marketplace. It soon will prove practical to heed this call. Saturn in Sagittarius is insisting that it is vitally important to understand the nature of one’s limits. Social and environmental limits can no longer be ignored. Those who factor them in will be winners in the long run. Smart businesses are informed and visionary.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)

Uranus remains in Aries and only moves incrementally forward this financial year. Uranus is about figuring out the balance between groundedness and innovation. He is here to teach you how to fly high with your feet planted on solid ground. To go off like a helium balloon into the land of wild ideas without something to temper you, would be a faux pas. To be so planted on mother earth that you miss noticing important contemporary currents, would also be a sure-fire way to miss the boat. Being an adventurous Aries, you are more likely to lean towards the former than the latter. To be an entrepreneur is to live an adventure that is as fraught as it is thrilling. The great Aries lesson, drawn from the archetypal depths of Greek mythology, is to remember that you need to have an adroit and acutely sensitive set of advisors around you – and be prepared to listen to them.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)

It is becoming increasingly obvious that to prosper you need to build solid roots in community. If the community you find yourself in inhibits rather encourages you, it may be time to step out of your comfort zone and search for your correct tribe. It takes a lot for a Taurus to move. Ultimately what moves you, is your sense that there must be greater delight out there beyond your usual paddock. Venus is your guiding light. The good thing is that she is a planet of good fortune, so if you listen to her, she tends to land you in clover. Though you may seem placid on first impression, there’s a solid current of ambition in there that will allow you the energy to feather your nest and the nests of those around you. Be careful that you don’t find yourself at odds with the market. One has to be a part-time sociologist to understand the whims of collective interest.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)

There’s an introspective you and there’s an extroverted you. You have to live with both of them, as do those who live and do business with you. You are far more contemplative than people generally give you credit for. For every butterfly dance you do through the world at large, there has been a preceding patch of deep solitary reflection. You are astrologically ruled by Mercury, the God of Commerce. Unfortunately, he is also the God of Tricksters and Thieves. Without periods of reflection, you could easily lead yourself and a gaggle of others up the garden path. Find the path that leads to your authentic voice and you will make wise decisions. Get caught in everybody else’s insubstantial opinion and you are in trouble. In matters of money you are driven by the need to create a place of warmth and shelter. Don’t be afraid of your own brilliance when it enters centre stage.

CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)

The financial year always starts when the Sun is in Cancer. Though Cancer is the archetypal symbol for motherhood, financial issues are not far away from every crustacean’s consciousness. You’ve been focused on having your roots firmly planted in the ground — and savouring all the pleasures that come with that. You are now heading for a time where you can focus wholly on mastering your craft. As the year progresses, so you will find yourself gaining access to more of your will. Mars is slowly heading your way. He brings with him assertiveness and an overriding need for adventure. You’ll have to tap into the part of you that likes to go out and meet the world head-on, to make the most of his in-coming energy. Know that life is going to crank up your vital forces. As you immerse yourself in projects that fire your heart, so a powerhouse of creativity will surface.

LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)

There is a certain irony in the fact that one must be able to remember oneself, to be centred and switched on to what’s going on inside oneself, before one can be an effective altruist. Culturally we’ve mistaken narcissism for self-remembering. As the king or queen of the jungle, it is on your shoulders to figure this dilemma out — and apply what you know, in a meaningful way in the world at large. Narcissism is exploitative. To have a genuine remembrance of self, is to have access to a golden, solar burst of creativity. Your job is to shine. To be truly successful, to enrich the world, your challenge is to bring added meaning to the marketplace. These are transformational times. Business will inevitably have to shift, to factor in the environment and social change. Authentic capitalism, should be the very embodiment of freedom and creativity.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

Jupiter is with you for half of the year. Jupiter is all about the good fortune that comes with expansion. To expand as a Virgo, means attuning yourself to the natural order, inside and out. It means leaving behind narrow views of the world that inhibit your power and fecundity. Focus on getting your roots down. Do what you can to increase your resources, without getting so obsessed with saving, that you forget to keep your eyes open to the changes going on around you. Whichever way you look at it, the world is on the threshold of major change. If you are at all aware of those who will be following in your footsteps, you will, along with a whole lot of other people, be doing the best you can to figure out better ways to attend to society’s fundamental necessities. You understand structure: how things work. Look for new ways to free up your natural talent.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

Venus begins the financial year in Cancer, keeping you focused on home, hearth, and bottom-line issues of safety and security. By the end of the financial year she is in Taurus, where she will give you a taste of what it means to have solid foundations and be able to savour the good things in life. To get there, you will have to do a lot of work to understand what makes other people tick. There are powerful currents running through the world. Not all of them are showing up on the front pages of newspapers. To get a genuine sense of what’s really trending, you will have to have your ear close to the ground. Place yourself where there is need, and a way to respond to that need, that matches your creativity and integrity. Know your market. Jupiter arrives midyear. He brings expansion, empowerment and good fortune. Avoid hubris.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)

Mars is with you for the first part of the financial year. This gives you plenty of horsepower to get on with projects that need a push. If Mars isn’t expressed creatively he gets stroppy, so move your energy. Don’t get waylaid, becalmed or side-tracked. For all the mystique you carry as a Scorpion, your interests are generally gloriously mundane: of the earth. You want the ones you love to live well and you are willing to do what it takes to make that happen. You only tend to come unstuck when you drift into fixity or obsession. It’s always good to avoid that. Life is presently moving the tectonic plates under our feet. Those who are afraid of change are trying to make it stop by taking extreme positions, left or right, religious and secular. When it comes to positioning yourself in the world, have a broad view. Know what’s going on and where you stand.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

No matter what else is going on in the world, you are host to Saturn, which continues to dominate the nature of your adventure. Saturn tends to do his business by applying the brakes. He makes us learn those lessons inherent in patience. This is not the moment to be in a hurry, especially when it comes to bringing your masterpiece to market. If we can master the lesson of patience, we immediately get access to the kind of wisdom that helps us give birth to considered intelligent decisions. Forget the distant horizon. Focus on what’s right before your eyes. It is by keeping your gaze alive to the here and now that you will bring your worldly creativity to fruit. It doesn’t matter what you do, if you do it with the kind of love and attention to detail this moment entails, you will succeed. Explore the pleasures of craft and mastery. Be less anxious in the game of money.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Pluto spends the whole financial year going backwards and forwards in Capricorn. The word Pluto means ‘gold’. He was also the Greek God associated with the underworld, which was envisioned as a place of either terror, or bliss. The terror was mostly the result of self-inflicted fears. Bliss invariably came to those who were able to relax their uncertainties and be with what is. Apply this to your financial and business affairs and it all gets very interesting. If you get caught in your own self-created web of anxiety, it will impact not only on your health and well-being but also on your wallet. Relax your fears and the path to riches is lit with considerably more clarity. These are transformational times. Whole new approaches to business, environment and social issues are now a conservative necessity. Good relationships are vital.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Life is uprooting you in places where you are so tangled in the past that you can’t move on. Rather than gripping old habits even more tightly, be aware of what is going on and let go lightly. Life has you on-line for a transition in how you approach your career, your calling. With Uranus, your ruling planet, in adventurous Aries, you most certainly won’t be doing any fence-sitting. Even if you feel like you are in no-man’s land, as if you’ve gotten off one horse but haven’t quite managed to get on another, stick with your plan. Chances are you’ve considered your move thoroughly. Going backwards isn’t really an option. Even if you do pick up your old trade, you are bound to go about it in a new way. You are right in the thick of a period of regeneration and rejuvenation. Look around. You are being supported in all sorts of amazing ways.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

Neptune and Chiron have taken up a long-term tenancy in Pisces. Neither are particularly easy to get your head around. They are poetic and nebulous; hardly the stuff of left-brain financial matters. Neptune is a force within that essentially drives us to dream. We’d be lost without it, but it doesn’t always translate to meaningful ways of fattening your wallet. Chiron is the astrological shaman: a symbol of healing. We have two sides to our brain. One linear and conservative. One holistic and creative. You are a creative. While others are making plans, you are surfing intuitive hunches. It would be truly healing for you to realise that your approach isn’t as far-fetched as it initially seems. You are in transition. Appreciate the pragmatists as much as you’d like them to appreciate you. Whole human beings are rich in business — and soul.
